The Best Beaches in Zanzibar

6 min read · Updated June 2026

The short answer

Zanzibar's best beaches depend on what you want. Nungwi and Kendwa in the north have the finest swimming and least tidal change; Paje and Jambiani in the east are kitesurfing and lagoon paradises; Matemwe is quiet and close to Mnemba's reefs. Tides shape the experience, so choose your coast to match your priorities.

'Best beach' on Zanzibar isn't one place — it's the one that fits how you want to spend your days. The biggest factor most people don't expect is the tide: some beaches stay swimmable all day, while others empty out dramatically at low water. Here's how to choose.

Match the beach to your bearings

North for swimming, east for lagoons and wind sports, north-east for reefs. Get oriented first, then pick.

Zanzibar's main island packs a lot into a short drive: powder-white beaches in the north, a kitesurfing lagoon coast in the east, historic Stone Town on the west, and reefs and forest in between. Where you base yourself shapes your whole trip.

The north — Nungwi & Kendwa

These are the postcard beaches and the best for swimming, because the tidal range is smaller and the water stays deep enough all day. Nungwi is livelier with bars and boat trips; neighbouring Kendwa is a touch more relaxed and famous for its sunsets and full-moon parties.

The east — Paje, Jambiani & Bwejuu

The east coast has impossibly turquoise lagoons protected by an offshore reef, and steady winds that make Paje one of the world's great kitesurfing spots. The trade-off is a big tidal range: at low tide the sea retreats far out, revealing sandbars, seaweed farms and starfish — beautiful, but not always swimmable.

Good to know

On the east coast, a hotel with a pool is worth having for low-tide hours — or simply plan beach swims around the tide tables.

Quieter corners

  • Matemwe (NE) — laid-back, with easy access to Mnemba's snorkelling
  • Pongwe — sheltered, calm and very peaceful
  • Kizimkazi (S) — base for dolphin trips
  • Pemba Island — wild, remote and superb for diving, for the adventurous

Frequently Asked Questions

Nungwi and Kendwa in the north, because their smaller tidal range keeps the water deep and swimmable throughout the day. Many east-coast beaches are stunning but go far out at low tide.

The east coast has a large tidal range, so the sea retreats a long way at low tide; the north is much less affected. If all-day swimming straight off the beach matters to you, the north is the safer bet.
