Stone Town: A Visitor's Guide

6 min read · Updated June 2026

The short answer

Stone Town is the historic heart of Zanzibar and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — a labyrinth of coral-stone buildings, carved wooden doors, bazaars and waterfront history reflecting Swahili, Arab, Indian and European influences. A half to full day exploring it, ideally with a guide, is a highlight of any Zanzibar trip.

Before the beaches, give Zanzibar's soul a day. Stone Town is a living museum of the Swahili coast — a maze of narrow lanes where the scents of spice and the sea mingle, ornate doors hint at the merchants who once lived behind them, and the call to prayer drifts over rooftops at dusk. Here's how to experience it.

Why it's special

Stone Town earned its UNESCO listing as one of the best-preserved Swahili trading towns in the world. For centuries it was a hub of the spice and, painfully, the slave trade, and that crossroads history shows in its architecture — Arab, Indian, Persian and European influences fused into something unique. Getting lost in its alleys is part of the magic.

What to see

  • The famous carved doors — each one a status symbol of its original owner
  • The Old Fort and House of Wonders on the waterfront
  • The former slave market and Anglican cathedral, a sobering, important visit
  • Darajani Market for spices, fruit and everyday island life
  • Forodhani Gardens at dusk for the lively street-food night market

Tip

Go with a local guide for at least the first couple of hours. The lanes are a maze, and the stories behind the doors and buildings bring the place alive in a way wandering alone can't.

Spice tours and beyond

Stone Town is the launch point for Zanzibar's famous spice-farm tours, where you'll see, smell and taste cloves, cinnamon, vanilla and nutmeg growing — the crops that made the island rich. It's also where boats leave for Prison Island and its giant tortoises. Most travellers pair a night or two here with their beach stay.
