How to Combine Kilimanjaro, Safari & Zanzibar

7 min read · Updated June 2026

The short answer

Kilimanjaro, a northern safari and Zanzibar combine beautifully because they all sit near the same northern hub. The ideal order is climb first (while you're fresh), then safari, then unwind on Zanzibar's beaches. Allow around two weeks. It's the ultimate Tanzania trip — effort, wonder and reward in sequence.

If you're going all the way to Tanzania, why choose just one of its wonders? The country's three signature experiences — climbing Kilimanjaro, a Serengeti safari, and the beaches of Zanzibar — fit together into one unforgettable journey. Here's how to sequence and plan the ultimate 'summit, safari and sea'.

Why it works

All three experiences radiate from the same corner of northern Tanzania — Kilimanjaro and its international airport, the safari parks a few hours west, and Zanzibar a short hop off the coast. That geography makes combining them far easier than it sounds, with minimal backtracking.

The ideal order

Climb first, while your legs and enthusiasm are fresh and before any beach relaxation saps your drive. Follow it with a safari — a gentler, awe-filled few days that double as recovery — and finish on Zanzibar, where you can soothe tired muscles on a beach with a cocktail. Effort, wonder, reward, in that order.

  • 1. Kilimanjaro — tackle the challenge first, fresh
  • 2. Safari — wonder and recovery in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro
  • 3. Zanzibar — rest and celebrate on the beach

Tip

Build in a rest day after Kilimanjaro before the safari. You'll appreciate the lie-in, and it smooths the transition from mountain to bush.

How long to allow

For all three without rushing, plan for around two weeks: roughly a week on Kilimanjaro, three to four safari days, and three or four nights on Zanzibar, plus a rest day. If time is tight, you can shorten the climb route or trim beach nights — but each element really deserves its space.
