Register at Marangu Gate (1,860 m) and trek through lush, wide-trailed rainforest alive with birds and primates. Reach Mandara Hut and, with time to spare, walk to nearby Maundi Crater for views of Mawenzi Peak.

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
The forest gives way to open moorland of giant lobelias and groundsels as the air thins. Horombo Hut sits on a ridge with sweeping views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks.

Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut
A dedicated acclimatization day. After breakfast, take a short hike to Zebra Rocks (about 4,000 m) to help your body adjust, then return to Horombo to rest — the single best thing you can do for your summit chances.

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Ascend across 'The Saddle', a vast desert-like plateau between Mawenzi and Kibo. Arrive at Kibo Hut, eat an early dinner and rest — the summit push begins around midnight.

Summit Day — Uhuru Peak, descend to Horombo
Set off just after midnight for the steep, thin-aired climb to Gilman's Point (5,685 m) on the crater rim, then on to Uhuru Peak, 5,895 m, for sunrise. Descend to Kibo for a brief rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut.

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate, return to Moshi
A final descent through the rainforest to Marangu Gate, where you receive your summit certificate. Transfer back to your Moshi hotel for a farewell lunch and a well-earned rest.
