  1. 1

Arusha to Umbwe Gate, trek to Umbwe Cave Camp

A short drive to the quiet Umbwe Gate, then straight into a steep, ancient ridge forest — narrow trail with hands-on-root scrambling in places. Camp just above the treeline with the first open views of Kibo.

Lunch, dinner · Umbwe Cave Camp (tents)

  2. 2

Umbwe Cave Camp to Barranco Camp

Breakfast, lunch, dinner · Barranco Camp (tents)

  3. 3

    Acclimatisation day at Barranco

The strategic heart of the itinerary. A short 'climb high, sleep low' walk to about 4,200 m and back, with rest, hydration and full health monitoring — the single biggest investment in summit night.

    4,200 m2–3 hours4 km

Breakfast, lunch, dinner · Barranco Camp (tents)

  4. 4

Barranco Camp to Barafu via the Barranco Wall

Scramble the 257 m Barranco Wall — hands and feet, no ropes — onto the Southern Circuit, lunch in the Karanga Valley, then the final climb to the windswept high camp at Barafu. Early dinner and sleep before the midnight start.

  5. 5

Summit night — Uhuru Peak, descend to Mweka

Depart around midnight by headlamp up the scree to Stella Point on the crater rim for sunrise, then the final traverse to Uhuru Peak, 5,895 m — the roof of Africa. Descend all the way to Mweka Camp.

Fit, experienced hikers who have done multi-day mountain treks before — and groups who want the most direct, most challenging ascent. It is not a good choice for a first big trek or for anyone with a history of altitude sickness. If you're unsure, contact us and we'll give an honest recommendation.

Harder. Umbwe is the steepest, most direct route on the mountain, gaining altitude faster than any other. The Day 1 forest involves genuine scrambling, and the Barranco Wall on Day 4 is a hands-and-feet scramble (no ropes needed). The Day 3 rest day at Barranco is what makes the 6-day version responsible.

With proper fitness preparation, full guide coverage and the built-in acclimatisation day, groups consistently achieve summit success rates of about 75–88% on the 6-day Umbwe.

We recommend a maximum of 8 climbers per group because of the narrow ridgeline and the technical Barranco Wall. For groups of 9–16 we run two guide teams. Itineraries can be customised for corporate teams, charity expeditions and clubs.

January–March and June–October. June–October is peak season with the finest, clearest conditions. April–May (the long rains) is not recommended on Umbwe — wet rock and root make the steep forest ridge genuinely hazardous.
