Momela Gate to Miriakamba Hut
From Momela Gate the trail crosses open grassland with cape buffalo and warthogs — with luck, giraffe and elephant too — then climbs steadily through montane forest (lunch at the famous Fig Tree). The forest thins to birdlife and black-and-white colobus monkeys, and by mid-afternoon you reach Miriakamba Hut in a grassy glade with views across the plains toward Kilimanjaro.

Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut + Little Meru
A steep, sustained climb through lush montane forest, over the Elephant Back Ridge and up through giant heather and moorland to Saddle Hut, reached in time for lunch. In the afternoon, an optional 1-hour climb to the nearby summit of Little Meru (3,820 m) rewards you with superb views before an early night ahead of the summit push.

Summit Socialist Peak, descend to Momela Gate
An early start (~midnight) with a steep hour to Rhino Point (3,800 m), then along a ridge of ash and rock to Cobra Point (4,350 m) and on to Socialist Peak (4,566 m) for sunrise — the crater cliffs, the Ash Cone, and Kilimanjaro above the clouds. Retrace the dramatic ridge to Saddle Hut for brunch, then descend through forest and grassland (more wildlife) to Miriakamba and on to Momela Gate by afternoon.
