Day-by-Day Itinerary

  1. 1

Arusha to Lake Natron & Ngare Sero Waterfalls

Drive 5–6 hours north from Arusha through the Great Rift Valley, with views of Mount Meru, the Ngorongoro Highlands and Maasai settlements, to Lake Natron. After lunch overlooking Ol Doinyo Lengai, walk to the hidden Ngare Sero Waterfalls — wading through a narrow canyon to swim beneath the falls — then a sunset over the lake and dinner at the lodge.

  2. 2

Midnight Summit Climb of Ol Doinyo Lengai

Wake around 11 PM for tea and snacks, then transfer to the base and begin the steep climb shortly after midnight. With Maasai guides, ascend 4–7 hours to reach the summit at dawn for panoramas over Lake Natron, the Rift Valley, Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro on clear mornings. The 3-day adds the Ngare Sero waterfalls on arrival and a Lake Natron flamingo walk on the final day, plus a more relaxed recovery afternoon after the summit — a fuller experience of the region, not just the climb.

Challenging — about 1,600 m of ascent over a short, steep distance to 2,962 m, taking 4–7 hours up from a midnight start. No technical climbing, but it's a real physical and mental test; the guides pace it to your group.

June–October and December–March are best for clearer, cooler conditions. The basin is extremely hot, which is why the climb is done overnight year-round.
